Literacy at Evatt

Literacy is fundamental to constructing and communicating knowledge and understanding across all areas of learning.

Literacy is embedded across the curriculum in contexts that are authentic, socially and culturally appropriate and engaging. Students are explicitly taught skills and develop knowledge to become active learners.

At Evatt, we provide a daily balanced literacy program,  incorporating guided reading, differentiated writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting as well as listening, speaking and viewing.

Literacy support teachers work with small groups of students for targeted additional literacy assistance and/or English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) support.

Parents and teachers work in partnership to support the development of  literacy skills.  This is promoted through The Nest, which is open every morning from 8:30 for parents to have a hot drink and share a book  with their child.  Parent workshops are also offered, designed to support literacy development at home.
