Student Management

STUDENT BEHAVIOUR and STUDENT ENVIRONMENT

The development of consistent and acceptable standards of behaviour amongst children and respect for the rights and property of others, is the joint responsibility of both school and home.

STUDENT MANAGEMENT POLICY

This policy outlines the program of social development and management used at Evatt Primary School. The program was developed through the cooperation of pupils, parents and teachers. It is based on children accepting that with every right comes a series of responsibilities and that consequences will follow unacceptable behaviour. Outstanding effort is recognised through the “Flying High Award”,“Aussie of the Month Award” and "The Principal's Award".

The full Student Management Program is set out in a policy document, which we are always happy to make available and to discuss with parents. Our procedures are aligned with Departmental policy and a copy is distributed to each parent upon enrolment.

SCHOOL COUNSELLING SERVICES

The School Counsellor attends Evatt Primary School one and a half days per week, providing assistance to children with learning difficulties or social/behavioural concerns. The Counsellor is qualified in psychology, as well as having a teaching background. The Counsellor assesses the child’s needs, consults with parents and teachers and continues to follow up and monitor progress as long as is necessary. Parents wishing to consult the Counsellor may do so by making an appointment through the Front Office.

Evatt Primary also has a Chaplain Program for students.

Commencing in Term 3, 2008, Evatt Primary will also have a social worker from the

LIAISON WITH HIGH SCHOOLS AND PRE-SCHOOLS

Evatt Primary School is part of the active Melba and Copland College Cluster of schools. Liaison across the cluster allows children to move from one level of education to the other without undue interruption to their progress. Cluster schools work together on special programs such as environment education and enrichment opportunities for students. As of 2008, Evatt Pre-School has amalgamated with Evatt Primary to provide further educational links through an orientation program, regular school visits and shared communities activities.

CHILDREN LEAVING SCHOOL

Children will not be allowed to leave the school grounds during school hours without a parent, unless a note is sent by parents/guardians and the Principal gives approval. Parents who collect children during the day are required to sign out the child at the school Front Office.

ILLNESS

Children who are unwell should not be sent to school. If a child becomes sick at school, parents will be contacted by the First Aid Officer to arrange for them to be picked up. If a child has been ill and is taking prescribed medication a form giving permission to administer medication with dosage times and amounts needs to be completed and handed in at the Front Office with the labelled medication. Asthma medication must be well labelled and expiry dates checked. Always make sure that contact numbers are updated with the Front Office in case of an emergency.

DENTAL HEALTH SERVICE

The A.C.T. Government provides a dental service for school children through the Health Centres. You can make appointments for check-ups and dental work by phoning the Belconnen Children’s Dental Clinic on 6205 1541 or have your child examined during the annual school visit.
